Philosophy of Special Education
Advocacy, Access, and High Expectations for Every Learner
Advocacy, Access, and High Expectations for Every Learner
Presuming Competence in Every Learner
Meaningful progress begins with the foundational belief that every child is capable of learning, communicating, and making significant growth. Special education should never be a destination that limits potential; rather, it is a mobile system of specialized services designed to provide rigorous access to grade-level content. By implementing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and individualized scaffolds, I focus on unlocking students’ inherent strengths rather than defining them by deficits.
LRE & Proactive Behavioral Supports
Access to the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) is both a legal entitlement and a moral imperative. When behavioral or emotional dysregulation creates barriers to learning, I treat behavior as communication. Rather than relying on reactive or exclusionary practices, I implement trauma-informed, function-based supports, predictable routines, and explicit regulation instruction. My goal is to foster an emotionally safe environment where students build self-advocacy and lasting independence.
Data Integrity & Collaborative Partnership
True student success is the collective outcome of an aligned multidisciplinary team. Effective special education hinges on close, empathetic partnerships with general education colleagues, dedicated paraprofessionals, and families. Guided by continuous, objective progress monitoring data, I approach case management with transparency and legal fidelity—ensuring IEP goals are active, responsive roadmaps that celebrate every milestone.
